Latest NewsTHE GOVERNMENT SHOULD SET OUT ITS STRATEGY TO TACKLE THE ECONOMIC SITUATION 09.10.2008"The Government should make a clear statement of what it intends to do to respond to the growing prospect that we are entering a worldwide recession. At the moment it is showing no leadership whatsoever on this issue. Governments worldwide have moved quickly to reassure citizens and the markets. In Gibraltar the comparative silence from Government is both surprising and indicative that it may have no idea of how to deal with this crisis." GOVERNMENT'S HOUSING POLICY FAILS TO MEET THE NEEDS OF ORDINARY WORKING PEOPLE 23.06.2008When will the Government finally accept that it has failed to meet the housing needs of ordinary working people? Every day our newspapers are filled with advertisements for the sale of properties in the market which are out of reach of the ordinary working citizen. Even the Waterport Terraces development has failed to meet the needs of those most in need of affordable housing in Gibraltar. How does the Government expect to encourage people to move out of Government rental accommodation in order to elevate pressure on the housing list when the starting position with affordable housing is invariable in the £100,000+ bracket? LIFEGUARD FACILITIES AND BEACHES 12.06.2008The PDP are concerned that the lifeguard situation on our beaches is inadequate. This point has been highlighted by the late delivery of the launches used by these teams. There are a number of factors that require attention, particularly the location of the lifeguard posts. 2008 BUDGET - A BAG OF CONTRADICTIONS.... 11.06.2008"The 2008 Budget has been a disappointing, unimaginative package that has shown the Government´s marked unwillingness to deal with the real social and economic issues faced by many people" said PDP Leader, Keith Azopardi. THE DANGERS TO HEALTH AND PROPERTY OF SPRAY EMISSIONS IN THE NEW HARBOURS AREA 29.05.2008The over-spray of paint and other such chemicals that many residents complain originate from both the ship repair yard and the various construction projects in the south district has been a long standing issue with residents of the area. These must be better controlled as they pose a serious risk to health and regularly damage property. EPIDEMIOLOGICAL STUDY OF THE BAY AREA WELCOMED 29.05.2008The Progressive Democratic Party welcomes the Gibraltar Government´s recently announced commitment to embark on an independent epidemiological study of the impact on health that bay industries are having on our community. A VOLUNTARY JURY SYSTEM WOULD BE A STEP TOO FAR 15.05.2008There are aspects of the recent consultation paper on Jury Reform that are of concern and would be a step too far if implemented. The most radical proposal is that Government is considering the replacement of the current jury system which is based on random selection with a pool of voluntary jurors. THE NEED FOR A FULL REVIEW OF SOCIAL SERVICES 14.05.2008The current focus on whether the Police or Attorney General consider there is sufficient evidence to investigate or prosecute as a result of specific instances of alleged criminal conduct cannot end the concerns that users have of the level and quality of service provided by the Social Services Ministry and is somewhat of a red herring. The fact that criminal prosecutions do not take place does not give social services a clean bill of health in terms of the service provided to families and residents of the Dr Giraldi Home. OEM DEVELOPMENTS - LESSONS TO BE LEARNT 12.05.2008It is well-known that the Government had to take-over the OEM housing projects in an attempt to salvage those projects. It has, though, preferred to maintain its silence rather than give detailed and specific answers to reasonable questions such as the cost to the tax-payer that this take-over would have. Prospective purchasers will also wonder [like the purchasers at Waterport Terraces] how it is possible to mis-manage these schemes to the extent that these suffer years of delay. The OEM project at Nelsons View was originally supposed to be completed in September 2007. WORKERS MEMORIAL DAY AND MAY DAY MESSAGE 25.04.2008The PDP wholeheartedly support the Workers Memorial Day event being organised by the TGWU/UNITE at the Alameda Gardens on Monday 28 April.
